Arizona football hires Paul Rhoads as Defensive Coordinator

Rhoads comes to Tucson from UCLA where he served the past two seasons as the program's defensive backs coach. In Rhoads' first season at UCLA, the Bruins defense improved statistically in several categories including average gain per rush allowed, total offense yards allowed per game, turnovers forced and points per game allowed.

"I can't begin to express how excited and grateful I am to have the opportunity to work alongside Coach Sumlin and the rest of the Arizona Football Family," Rhoads said. "I look forward to getting to know our student-athletes and getting to work on putting them in a position to be successful at a high level. (My wife) Vickie and I are thrilled to be able to become a part of the University of Arizona and Tucson community."

I like this hire guys!

Rhoades was credited as being the top recruiter at UCLA under Chip Kelly. He's tough on his players, but the kinds of young men who love playing for guys like Rhoads are who we want, and who we need, at Arizona. I'm excited! Let's go! #BearDown

I think this is good, nothing else seemed to be working, maybe some tough love is the key.

Ok so Paul Rhode as DC? Kind of Surprise Sumlin Didn't give the job too Cecil and that good thing. Rhode Should do good, But it not about being a Top Recruiter it more about can he manage what been giving to him.

I don't know anything about Rhoads more than that has been posted here or what's google-able, but I refuse to get distracted from Sumlin being on the hook. This sounds more like a forced hire from powers above where Sumlin has to train his replacement and Rhoads is potentially equipped to takeover as Head Coach when Sumlin is fired with or without cause early to middle of next season.

Just my take. Could be wrong. Hope that isn't actually the plan, but its a curious hire considering the type of coach and experience this guy has.

First off what make you think this hired was force? That like saying RR was forced to hired Yates as DC. I mean who was Sumlin suppose to hired as DC?

Cecil was right their from the start and that would of been a force hired from the start. Look Sumlin is still on the Hot seat and with Rhode as DC that might change.

He will not boost recruiting, He only has to manage what he has.
