Derek Dixon 6'5 North Carolina transfer PG has committed to Arizona!

Derek Dixon, a 6-foot-5 freshman guard from North Carolina, officially committed to the Arizona Wildcats men's basketball program on Monday. After one season with the Tar Heels, Dixon entered the NCAA transfer portal and will bring three years of eligibility to Tucson as he joins head coach Tommy Lloyd's squad for the 2026-27 season. The move comes on the same day Arizona added former Washington guard JJ Mandaquit, giving the Wildcats two new backcourt pieces to replace the production lost with the departure of standout point guard Jaden Bradley.

During his freshman year at North Carolina, Dixon appeared in 35 games with 16 starts, averaging 6.5 points, 2.7 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per contest. He flashed strong perimeter shooting and playmaking ability, highlighted by an impressive 11-point, five-rebound, six-assist performance in the NCAA Tournament against VCU. A highly regarded prospect out of Virginia, Dixon possesses ideal size, length, and versatility for the guard position, traits that should translate well in Tommy Lloyd's fast-paced, guard-oriented system.

Wildcat fans should be excited about what Dixon brings to the table. His combination of freshman-year production, physical tools, and basketball IQ gives Arizona a versatile guard who can step in and compete for minutes right away. Pairing him with the earlier addition of JJ Mandaquit creates real depth and competition in the backcourt alongside incoming freshmen, helping the Wildcats build a more balanced and experienced roster as they gear up for another tough Big 12 slate and aim for a deep postseason run in 2026-27. It feels like a strong, forward-thinking pickup that addresses exactly what the program needs heading into the new season.

Welcome to the family that is Arizona Derek!
We are glad to have you on board!

I really hope Lloyd does not try to start Mandaquit and Dixon in the backcourt with Holt and roll the ball out.
I would prefer Lloyd's offense to be ran by a true PG like Mandaquit, but I would not mind the idea of rolling out TWO 6'5 Gs on the perimeter in Dixon/Holt.

I think it is a great Pick Up.

The depth is important (Dixon).

Whether he starts or not is up to how much buy in he has.

JJ the Man is a real PG. For better or worse we needed it.

The key is getting everyone possible to stay this year and beyond.

Tommy has stepped up IMHO.

I hope he gets to stick around the Team USA Junior Olympics

Will Jack Murphy, basketball Jesus's bestest assistant make another portal addition this week?

Watching Mandaquit reminds me of Jackson-Cartwright from the earlier Miller days.
I also believe a true PG is going to be able to unlock a new level of efficiency for this program as someone that is not trying to score, but to get his teammates open looks in good spots.

I like dixon , however I was hoping for arizona to bring zoom in, like the idea of dixon as a 6th man, not sure as a starter, we have to hope he develops.
