Wow!
I stand corrected then.
It sounds like some of these rankings have a bit of hype factored into it to then?

Quote from: FOOS on August 13, 2025, 11:45:19 AMSwap Few and Izzo IMO.  And 100% on Beard and Oats......
I believe Few got that high of a nod based on recency bias

Quote from: Deb on August 13, 2025, 12:17:23 PMIMO, Beard well deserves to be ahead of Lloyd. He made a title appearance in '19. He has 2 sweet16's, an EE and a FF. He is a good coach.

And Izzo at #12 is ridic. Guy has 8 FF's and a title. What the heck has Painter done to be #5?!? 1 FF gets you a top 5 spot? Silly.
Like they did with Few, I believe Painter got a huge bump based on recency bias.
Back-to-back National POY, a Final Four and loss to UConn in the National Championship Game within the past two seasons would make Painter look very good on paper.
5 Sweet 16s, 1 Elite Eight, 1 Final Four and National Champion Runner-Up?

I am not saying I agree with it.
I am simply saying I can understand how someone would do it.

.
Izzo has not had a good team at Michigan State in awhile.
While Few continues to have Final Four contenders every year.

Yeah man - hard to argue that.  Whoever created that should have added context e.g, , must have coached 5 years.  based on performance of those 5 years - not 20 years (Few/Izzo).  In the case 100% Few > Izzo

100% recency biased.

Kelvin Sampson, Mick Cronin, Dana Altman, Eric Musselman, and Sean Miller are the best Xs and Os guys overall. If you need a play drawn up or a defense, they are the ones. Maybe even Bruce Pearl too. I don't want to hear "pack line this, pack line that". Miller had Top Offensive teams and Top Defensive teams in his run at Arizona. He did a lot more with a lot less at times too. If you want to cherry pick the Ayton year as doing less with more go ahead. It was only a full blown FBI scandal that changed the entire College Landscape for NIL forever. Nothing special right? And it was really about Rawle.. while Trier was on Roids... and Ayton having an Adidas contact? but going to a Nike school? and signing his shoe deal with PUMA???? In the words of Doobie Bill Walton.... "Please" and "That's A Play On"

They can't take or make the shots for all of their expertise.

Few and Lloyd have a system. It works robotically. Few needed almost the entire 20 years to get to a Final 4. Same goes for Nate Oats and his barrage of 3's

Final 4 is not real metric in my opinion.

Jay Wright of Villanova would also be on this list if he weren't retired.

Any of these guys are capable of riding talent to the Natty. But it is the Basketball Minds that prevail IMHO.

For the record, Jon Scheyer deserves his ranking in my book. Not a Nepo-Hire for Duke. He is a good coach.

Pack Line was (and is) effective.  It allows opponents to occasionally get open looks from deep if your perimeter defenders are slow to extend when your Center rolls back to the lane but generally speaking it's a simple and consistent way to restrict scoring.

Never was Arizona ranked highly in scoring while Miller was in Tucson.  Archie was the X's and O's guy and it was obvious because when he departed for Dayton, our opponents embarrassed us when they played zone defense.

Scheyer "will" eventually deserve a ranking but I don't think it's fair to prioritize unproven coaches over guys that have earned multiple Final Fours and/or Titles.  Those accomplishments are rare & should be diminished by a few decent seasons.

I believe the entire list is recency biased ragebait.

Any of the coaches are capable of making deep runs.

Scheyer has a better understanding than people think. He can coach experienced guys and freshmen. Similar to JJ Reddick, no-nonsense approach. Uses his players. Relates to his players. Lakers have Nothing and do more with nothing than most teams. 1 or 2 guys isn't enough these days. Lakers do play Defense though in the NBA that is rare.

I am excited to see what happens and where these "rankings" would look like 1 year from now if anyone would care to post it again.
