Arizona Vs Houston 🏈 Game Preview/Discussion Thread 10/18/25 9am FS1

As the college football season heats up in Week 8, the Arizona Wildcats (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) face a pivotal road test against the surging Houston Cougars (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) on Saturday, October 18, at TDECU Stadium in Houston. Kicking off at an unusually early 9 a.m. MST (11 a.m. CT) on FS1, this matchup pits two teams hungry for momentum in a conference race that's already proving unforgiving. Arizona, coming off a tough 33-27 loss to No. 18 BYU that snapped their unbeaten streak, will look to rebound under second-year head coach Brent Brennan. The Wildcats boast a potent offense averaging 430 yards per game, led by quarterback Noah Fifita's sharp passing (261.8 yards per contest) and a ground attack that's churned out 143.8 yards on average. Defensively, Arizona ranks 20th nationally with a +5 turnover margin, a weapon that could exploit Houston's occasional miscues. Yet, memories of their 2018 debacle in Houston—a 45-18 rout under former coach Kevin Sumlin—loom large, adding extra motivation for a program that's 3-0 when holding opponents under 29.2 points this season.

Houston, meanwhile, enters as a legitimate Big 12 contender after a narrow first loss to ninth-ranked Texas Tech, with dual-threat quarterback Zeon Chriss—wait, no, Donovan Smith? Wait, Zeon Weigman—fresh off a 306-yard, two-touchdown performance in their setback. The Cougars' red-zone efficiency stands tall at 18th in the FBS (94.7% scoring rate), fueling an attack that generates 378.3 total yards per game, including a balanced 189 passing and 157.8 rushing. Under head coach Willie Fritz, Houston is 5-0 when scoring 29.2 or more points, and their home-field edge could prove decisive in this breakfast-time affair. Predictive models give Arizona a slight 49.4% edge to pull off the upset as underdogs, but the Cougars' undefeated mark against the spread as favorites (wait, no—actually, they're rolling at 5-0 when matching or exceeding opponents' defensive averages like Arizona's stingy 18.5 points allowed). Expect a high-stakes aerial duel and opportunistic plays to decide this one, with the winner bolstering its bowl credentials in a crowded Big 12 field.

Dang, that's a big list for UH.

Did we really have to specify that Burnett is out?  Perhaps he's still technically on the roster?

KansasCityCats

These refs are full of shit.

Second half call that should have been overturned, which would have taken an eventual TD off the board.

Early fourth quarter PI call that should have been OFFENSIVE.

Ending the game by disregarding the blatant Illegal Motion call, which would have pushed their awful kicker out of range AND taken time off the clock.

The announcers (and Mike Pereira) disagreed with each of these hometown "calls".

Absolute Big-12 garbage for the second straight week. Fifita played out of his mind. Our offensive line allowed our RB's to march down the field and our defense did enough to win.

One of the 6 worst losses of the Brennan Era in my Walton voice.

Noah Fifita, forever the poor decision maker. Not a Power 4 QB.

Can't read a defense. Cost us the game at the end of the 2nd Half with the RPO. Dude was too scared to run the play properly. Resulting in Houston scoring before the half.

Brennan is not absolved. We should be undefeated this year. He is just not a Power 4 Coach either.

Brennan + Noah would be rocking and rolling at San Jose State, but Arizona requires more.

I knew the Bye Week killed our Season's Momentum. It always does. But the BYU Meltdown performed by Noah and Brennan sealed the fate of the season.

Good luck to Houston. They have a puncher's chance at the Big12.

His stats are an illusion. Noah failed in the pivotal moments. Sealing our fate.

KansasCityCats

He absolutely allowed Arizona to win. Did you watch the game?  I'm pretty sure he just set a school record for completion percentage in a game. Scrambling for his life when Fritz constantly sent the blitz.

Unbelievable QB performance. He outplayed our opponent for the second consecutive week.
