Arizona Vs San Diego St 🏀 Game Preview/Discussion Thread 12/20 at 830pm ESPN2

Arizona and San Diego State meet tomorrow in a marquee non-conference matchup that brings together two programs known for physical defense and postseason success. The Wildcats enter the game unbeaten this season, averaging around 90 points per game while holding opponents to under 70 points, one of the best scoring margins in the country. Arizona has been dominant on the glass, ranking among the national leaders in rebounding margin, and has shot better than 50 percent from the field through its first stretch of games. The Wildcats' balanced attack has featured multiple double-figure scorers, allowing them to control tempo and overwhelm opponents early.

San Diego State comes in with a winning record and its usual defensive toughness, allowing roughly 68 points per game while forcing contested shots and turnovers. The Aztecs average around 80 points per game and rely on strong guard play and efficient three-point shooting to generate offense. Historically, Arizona has held the edge in the series, but San Diego State has built a reputation for grinding out wins against top competition. Tomorrow's matchup will test the Aztecs' ability to slow Arizona's fast-paced offense and challenge the Wildcats against one of the most disciplined defensive teams they'll face before conference play.

Let's talk about the Wildcats Vs Aztecs!

We all knew that SDSU was a miserable offensive team but it's a huge accomplishment to keep a D1 opponent under 20 points for a second half of basketball.

Miserable? The game was 33-37 into the 2nd half before we decided to play better defense and go on our "16-2" type run.

I don't understand your position here.

Yes, their offense is miserable. I've seen them play on multiple occasions this year.

SDSU scored 45 against a fast paced opponent, whom you claim "doesn't teach defense". They had 18 points in a half, only 7 assists and shot 1 of 14 from deep. That's sad for a program whose fans expect consistent conference titles.

Do I not preface my commentary with "I love to be proven wrong by Tommy" in one form or another?

This is called an "outlier".

Arizona is breaking records that are older than some of our wisest tribal elders on the forum. There was even a stat going back to 1947 for what we are currently doing. Something about 20pt wins consecutively I think.

In the end, SDSU did what I said they would do. It is OK for Tommy to be on a heater. The adjustments have been coming at Halftime. He is still playing with fire. One game there will be a player or two that decide they aren't going to flame out and they will go off taking it down to the wire.

We are now long removed from meaningful competition to even remember how to close out a tight game.

Sorry to say, but I will be pulling for your Home Team Bethune to make a game of it tonight. Doesn't mean they need to win the game.

Tommy's team is not without flaws, but I do think that if Aristode can unlock his potential soon then we will have that 1 extra "Bash" player (Ashley) who is 6'8" 220 and can make all plays happen. Something we may need if Tobe Awaka Rodman ever gets unjustly reffed out of a game or if Krivas has issues as well.

There is a universe where Koa and Aristode can lead a Small Ball lineup, but it will be ROUGH if it comes down to that.

Tommy needs to really get Sidi Gueye minutes in these games so he can get to a level where if we do run into trouble like that, that we have a "finisher" for alleyoops and someone who can also step out, knock one down, help make some space in the lane.

The Gortat Seal off is the primary strategy this season as opposed to the Moonball Lob thank goodness.

Let's choose to Believe that we can make it into Big12 play Undefeated and also not drop more than 1 game before February.

That is the next chunk/set of goals.
