1912-1915: Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca archaeologist and historian, persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to hold a "First Americans Day," making it the first nationwide celebration of Native American heritage.
1915: The Congress of the American Indian Association passed a resolution to create "American Indian Day," and Reverend Sherman Coolidge issued a proclamation designating the second Saturday in May for this purpose.
1976: President Gerald Ford authorized the first federal Native American heritage recognition week, "Native American Awareness Week".
1990: President George H.W. Bush officially designated November as National American Indian Heritage Month.
