What do you mean?
It is an assumption based on fact that has been observed.
A player who could have been dominant in College, could have become a #1 overall pick staying in College for 2 or 3 seasons (especially Carter given 2027 and 2028 is not deemed Generational) - choosing to leave ASAP for the Pros.
- Both not drafted as high as they should have been nor to a team that benefits them; where they are stashed behind so much established starting talent. Buried for years which will bite them both.
- Zeke has barely played at all in the NBA and still got a huge contract extension relative to his non-impact to the sport. It proves he is one of the best kept secrets in the league, but he will never reach his max monetary value due to the Draft Day circumstances. Especially now under the new CBA.
- Carter chose to start his All NBA clock without regard for landing spot. You need to meet certain criteria for a Super Max. Carter has no path to a Super Max being on the Spurs As-Is unless he can win DPOY starting 5 years from now at least a couple of times in a 3 year window. He should have made it clear he didn't want to go to SAS.
TLDR;
Carter, like Zeke, have capped career earning potential based on where they were drafted unless the status quo changes for Carter within this first year, like a mega trade that opens a pathway to playing time.
