The No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels (45-13) are set to host the Arizona Wildcats (42-18) in a highly anticipated Chapel Hill Super Regional starting June 6, 2025, at Boshamer Stadium, with a trip to the College World Series at stake. North Carolina, coming off a 14-4 rout of Oklahoma in the regional final, boasts a formidable offense led by Gavin Gallaher, who went 4-for-6 with two homers and four RBIs in that game. The Tar Heels' pitching staff, featuring Jake Knapp and freshmen Ryan Lynch and Walker McDuffie, has been dominant, posting a 3.12 ERA and 13 strikeouts in their last outing. Arizona, fresh from a 14-0 blowout over Cal Poly in the Eugene Regional, counters with a disciplined lineup averaging 6.8 runs per game in the postseason, led by Mason White's .340 batting average and Raul Garayzar's 2.89 ERA on the mound.

This best-of-three series promises a clash of strengths, with North Carolina's elite pitching facing Arizona's potent bats. The Tar Heels have a slight edge, with a 23.5% higher win probability per NCAA metrics, thanks to their balanced attack and home-field advantage at the electric Boshamer Stadium, where ticket sales and crowd energy are reportedly at an all-time high. Arizona's plate discipline will be tested against Knapp, who has allowed just 1.2 runs per game in his last five starts. Meanwhile, the Wildcats' ability to convert 68% of their scoring opportunities in regionals could challenge UNC's defense, which has committed only 0.8 errors per game this postseason. The series opener, airing at noon ET on ESPN2, is expected to set the tone, with analysts favoring UNC 8-0 in Game 1 due to their pitching depth.

Both teams bring momentum, but North Carolina playing at home with a battle-tested roster may hold the edge. Arizona's challenge lies in overcoming UNC's clutch hitting—60% of their regional runs were unearned—and their ability to draw walks (7.1 per game, third in the ACC). The Wildcats, however, have shown resilience, with a 3-2 record against top-10 teams this season.

Key players to watch for North Carolina, third baseman Gavin Gallaher and center fielder Vance Honeycutt are the ones to watch. Gallaher's recent 4-for-6 performance with two home runs and four RBIs in the regional final against Oklahoma highlights his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations, boasting a .345 batting average and 15 homers this season. His knack for clutch hitting, especially with runners in scoring position (.400 average), could exploit Arizona's pitching, which issues 5.2 walks per nine innings. Honeycutt, a defensive wizard, is a game-changer in center field, with two highlight-reel catches in the regional and a .320 average with 18 stolen bases, making him a dual threat to disrupt Arizona's offense and spark UNC's lineup.

For Arizona, shortstop Mason White and pitcher Raul Garayzar are the players to keep an eye on. White, batting .340 with 12 home runs and 45 RBIs, is the heart of the Wildcats' lineup, driving their 68% conversion rate in scoring opportunities during the postseason. His plate discipline (1.5 walks per strikeout) will test North Carolina's pitching staff, particularly Jake Knapp, who relies on precision to limit damage. Garayzar, with a 2.89 ERA, is Arizona's ace after throwing a complete-game shutout in the Eugene Regional final against Cal Poly. His ability to command the strike zone (only 1.8 walks per nine innings) will be crucial against UNC's walk-hungry offense, which averages 7.1 free passes per game. These players' performances will likely dictate whether North Carolina's home-field advantage or Arizona's offensive depth prevails.

Pitching was awful but credit to UNC's offense, who was on fire.

Arizona actually put a lot of men on base early but failed to capitalize with runners in scoring position. The Heels' defense was well coached because they shifted and anticipated our bats.

Solid game, especially considering the fact that our starter was pulled in the second inning and we relied on the bullpen to handle one of the top offenses in the country.

If Arizona can continue to knock in runs, I'm optimistic that we'll be in Omaha next week because UNC only has one pitcher that can shut us down (and the Cats put up a season high 9 hits on him, despite only scoring two runs).

Bear Down!

Today, June 8, 2025, at 9:00 AM MST, the Arizona Wildcats and No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels clash in a winner-take-all Game 3 of the NCAA Baseball Tournament Super Regional at Boshamer Stadium, broadcast on ESPN2. After North Carolina's dominant 18-2 win in Game 1, where they racked up 17 hits, including three home runs, Arizona responded in Game 2 with a 10-8 victory, driven by Maddox Mihalakis' three RBIs and a .357 team batting average (10-for-28). Arizona's bullpen, led by Tony Pluta's 2.1 scoreless innings, held off UNC's late rally. The winner earns a coveted spot in the College World Series in Omaha.

North Carolina's pitching staff, anchored by Jake Knapp (14-0, 2.45 ERA), boasts a team ERA of 3.12, third-best in the ACC, but faces Arizona's disciplined lineup, which ranks top-20 nationally with a .305 batting average and 78 stolen bases. The Tar Heels' offense, led by Casey Cook's .422 average and 15 homers, will test Arizona's starters, who struggled in Game 1, allowing 12 earned runs. Arizona's bullpen, with a 3.89 ERA, could be the X-factor, having limited UNC to two runs over the final three innings of Game 2. Expect a tight contest as both teams vie for supremacy in this high-pressure showdown.

What an awesome win! After getting smashed the first game, they had an uphill battle - but did it.

Congrats, they fought like Wildcats.
