Title: Top 16 seeds revealed
Post by: Cactus🌵Cat on February 10, 2025, 09:16:22 AM
The DI Men's Basketball Committee will share its in-season top 16 at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 15, on CBS. This will be on before AZ's pivotal big 12 game vs. Houston on Saturday.

Here is a historical look at how AZ's first in-season NCAA seeding compared to the actual Tournament seed.

2017: In-season 3, NCAA Tournament 2
2018: In-season 4, NCAA Tournament 4
2022: In-season 1, NCAA Tournament 1
2023: In-season 2, NCAA Tournament 2
2024: In-season 1, NCAA Tournament 2

A win over Houston would do WONDERS for the seeding.

Arizona jumped from "unranked" to #13 over a two week period.  The Cats are #7 in the NET Rankings and Top-10 in most power rankings (CBS, etc.).

Not bad, considering the fact that most people left Tommy Lloyd for "dead" when the record dropped to 4-5.

Arizona has played it's last game before the reveal.
Where will Arizona fall in the first in season top 16 seeds?

I'm guessing we're a 4-seed.  The early losses were sloppy and losing the day prior to the reveal doesn't help.

The good news is that the conference season is still young and receiving a low-seed will be motivating.

I don't think we have beaten anyone so far.

Currently we may be a "token" 4 seed, but we are really more like a 7 seed in actuality.

A win over Houston may juice us up to a 3 seed.

If anyone really thinks we can be a 3 seed, then that means we have a chance at a 1 seed at this very moment. So right about there is where the logic starts to show that we are not a true 3 or 4 seed.

The tournament is based on NET rankings.  Arizona was #7, headed into the matchup in Manhattan.  The math doesn't add up because the beginning of the season was ugly but the recent success in a tough conference will provide a boost in the projected seedings.

There's been a lot of talk about the big 12 being the 2nd or 3rd best conference in all of college basketball, but the league is still .500 since the start of conference play.

I think Arizona will be a 4 seed on Saturday.

Perhaps this is why people can never make a perfect bracket. Our situation is exactly why people can't get a real pulse for who is who and the only way to do well in March Madness is to have a team that is willing to Adapt because every team has their style and every tournament will have games with random teams playing out of their minds for ONE game, but there have been very few champs that have steamrolled through. There is always 1 or 2 times that a Coach has to be willing to go into their bag and trust that something different might work.

A good example I can remember is when Duke was on the ropes and Coach K went to a Freshman Grayson Allen off the bench in the CHAMPIONSHIP GAME and he scored like 10pts in a row propelling that team to the title.

A Frosh who played about 9 minutes a game and scored around 4ppg on 34% from 3pt land put Duke on his back...

Tommy will NEVER make that type of call.

Let that sink in.

True.  Like Lloyd putting freshmen Lewis and Krivas in the game to beat Dook in their house.

Or allowing freshman Boswell to step up and take the big shots in the conference championship game against UCLA.

Those never happened.

I fail to see where you are making the correlation. I said in March Madness. Tommy goes down with his ship and has zero plan/imagination for how to survive and advance.

For those who enjoy references:

Kansas was 22-10 last season.
10-8 in Big12 Conference Play.
Finished 5th in the Big12.

Kansas was a 6 seed in the Big 12 Conference Tournament (Breaker with BYU placed him 6th instead of 5th), earned 1 Bye to the 2nd round and got walloped by Cincinatti 72-52.

NCAA Selection Committee on "Selection Sunday" granted Kansas a 4 Seed where they faced a 13 seeded Samford and were basically on everyone's "upset list" as they lost one of their marquee players.

However, Kansas won their 1st round as they have the last 16 times in row before that (someone can research and check that if you want).

Kansas boasts a Winning Streak of 17 Games in a row and are 46-5 all time in the First Round assuming they make the Big Dance this season.

SO IF YOU WANT A BAROMETER OF WHERE ARIZONA CURRENTLY IS/SHOULD BE IN THE BRACKETS AT THE MOMENT...

Kansas shouldn't be anybody's barometer.

Although they're currently struggling, Bill Self took this program to new heights, including 14 consecutive conference titles (until Covid and espn's "recruiting investigation").

Lloyd made two Sweet 16's over the past three seasons, something KU can't say. In fact, Kansas has only been to one Sweet 16 since the 2018-19 season.

The difference, hiwever, is that their coach led them to four Final Fours since 2003. Arizona hasn't found a coach that can take them to ONE.

Bill Self was almost fired prior to the 2003 season because Jayhawk fans demanded success. New coaches deserve patience and we'll see how Coach Lloyd fares in March over the next two seasons.

If he can't consistently make it to the second weekend, the alumni obviously won't be happy.
