Arizona Vs Asu 🏀 Game Preview/Discussion Thread 2/1/25 11am CBS
Thy Wildcats get set to battle their arch-rivals, the Sun Devils, in Tempe, Arizona, in a Big 12 matchup. The Wildcats come into this matchup with an overall record of 14-6. The Sun Devils are 12-8 in their first season as a member of the Big 12.
Arizona picked up arguably their biggest win of the season on Monday night at the McKale Memorial Center in Tucson, Arizona with an 86-75 overtime win over #3 Iowa State. The win was the third straight for the suddenly surging Wildcats as they look to get back in the Top 25.
"It was a great moment for Arizona basketball, and we're going to celebrate that. I mean, our guys deserve it. Hasn't been an easy year, but we're trending in the right direction, so I'm thankful we found a way to get over the top." Our game recap can be found here." head coach Tommy Lloyd said after the big win.
The Wildcats turned away the Cyclones with a decisive 15-4 overtime edge to pick up the victory. Overtime was only made possible thanks to a half-court game-tying heave from Caleb Love. Love continued to carry the load in overtime, hitting two more 3-point field goals to push his team-leading point total to 22 points. Tobe Awaka had a big night as well with 17 points and 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Arizona was able to force 18 turnovers in the game against the Cyclones including 13 steals.
With three straight wins, the Arizona Wildcats have improved to 14-6 overall and an impressive 8-1 in the Big 12 in their first season in the conference. They now get a chance to make it four straight wins at the expense of their arch-rivals, the Arizona State Sun Devils. The Wildcats are second in the Big 12 in scoring this season. They are fourth in the conference in field goal shooting and just 14th in 3-point shooting. The Wildcats are 12th in 3-point field goals made per game in the Big Ten and are 16th in the country in offensive efficiency. They are 10th in the conference in scoring defense. The Wildcats are fifth in field goal defense and 9th in 3-point defense. They rank 23rd in the country in defensive efficiency. The Wildcats are 10th in turnover margin in the conference, fifth in scoring margin, and second in rebounding.
The Arizona State Sun Devils won for the second time in three games on Tuesday night with a 70-68 road win over Colorado in Boulder. The Sun Devils improved to 12-8 with the win and, after a 1-5 start in their first season in the Big 12, are now 3-6 in the conference. The win completes a season sweep of Colorado.
"Great road when they were desperate to win obviously. I got a ton of respect for Coach Boyle and what he's done here, what his program is all about, and how hard it is to win in this building. So it was a gut check game for us, just where we are in the standings, and want to try and climb ourselves out of the hole we kind of dug for ourselves. We dealt with a lot of stuff with injuries, and we're still dealing with it. We really stepped up, though." head coach Bobby Hurley said after the game.
ASU pulled out the win on Tuesday night despite a rash of injuries. Already without Jayden Quaintance with a foot injury, the Sun Devils lost leading scorer BJ Freeman four minutes into the game with an undisclosed injury.
The Sun Devils built an early lead and held on down the stretch despite a hard-fought comeback attempt by the Buffaloes. Adam Miller led the Sun Devils with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting including four 3-point field goals. Alston Mason had a big game as well with 17 points and Shawn Phillips chipped in with a near double-double of 13 points and nine rebounds. ASU won despite shooting just 44 percent from the field and turning the ball over 18 times.
The Sun Devils are now 12-8 overall and 3-6 in their maiden season in the Big 12 Conference. They have a chance to upend the Wildcats on Saturday, a team they've lost three straight games to and seven of their last eight. The Sun Devils come in ranked 10th in the Big 12 in points per game. They are 12th in field goal shooting and fifth in 3-point defense. The Sun Devils are 7th in the Big 12 in 3-point field goals per game and they are 104th in the country in offensive efficiency. On the defensive end, the Sun Devils are 13th in the Big 12 in points allowed per game. They are 9th in field goal defense and third in 3-point defense. The Sun Devils are ranked 30th in the country in defensive efficiency. They are second in turnover margin in the Big 12, 11th in scoring margin and 12th in rebounding.
Arizona is favored at 6.5 points and the Over/Under is 146.5 points

assu looked like garbage against CU last night. They tried hard to give the game away but the Buffs missed a million open jumpers to end the game.
Our matchup will likely involve a handful of "runs" for both teams. I'd prefer to just blow them out and focus on a tough week (in Provo and hosting TTU) but this game will be a rollercoaster. Perhaps decided by Bobby getting T'd up for whining (again).
Also, bonus points to any player that posterizes Sanon, which is unlikely because the guy won't step over the 3 point line to save his life.
Fans brawling in the stands last night... A preview for AZ @ ASU?

The guy being restrained looks like Wilford Brimley. That age range actually seems fitting for a majority of our fans, so yes...let's see some action on Saturday!
I assume there will be a lot of NBA scouts in the building to check out ASU's future pros. Imagine how good we would be if Tom could recruit like Bob.
If ASU wins, Koa Peat is theirs. Mark it down.
I always thought asu was the tougher of the 2 matchups this week. I think ASU is a bad matchup for us. If Quaintence and Feeman play I will pick them to upset us. Fast and athletic on the perimeter with length and athleticism inside are things we have trouble with, especially on the road. Plus, a general trend is teams not performing after big emotional wins. At least we have 4 days since the ISU game.

Doesn't Koa's brother play for Dilly? I think that may be the bigger pull towards ASU.

Sure, I'll take asu and the points.
If it's straight up, it's gotta be something like $5 for Truckstop and $20 for ZN

Because it's a stupid bet when $ is involved. I have a feeling asu will win is different then betting money asu will win. You have Arizona winning by 13. Give me 12 points and you should be fine.

I agree, betting against Arizona would be a stupid bet. Maybe that feeling you're having is just indigestion
Yeah man. Usually when I have a gut feeling, it inevitably just ends being diarrhea.

Betting against Arizona is just not fun. No fan wants to root for their team to lose or barely win to cover the spread.
Not sure why you get so triggered when people think Arizona will lose. Your first reaction every time is to start an argument. Arizona was never going 20-0 and have 6 losses to-date. When we all looked at the schedule, we see games that could be losses. It actually takes character to go with your gut and pick a loss. Have you even picked them to lose this year? I doubt it, because you seem to think someone is not a fan if they think they will lose or are critical of the team. I recall you thinking the football team would lose most their games. Pretty sure nobody feigned disbelief and gave you get grief for that?
You will be a better fan and person if you take this to heart Zona.
Nobody is triggered little buddy. I just wanted to know if you wanted to put some skin in the game. No big deal. Please calm yourself down. And for the record, I have picked arizona to lose this year and I'll pick them to lose again. Please do your homework

Arizona hasn't had a better record to start conference play since the 16/17 season. Maybe the big12 isn't very good?

With 6 of the top 16 BPI rankings, I'm not worried about the level of competition within the conference. Arizona just reverted back to their winning ways, after a 9-game struggle.
Great game. assu played tough and was efficient from the floor but our defense caused a lot of careless turnovers.
Also a bonus when we hit all of our FT's!
Also, Bobby Hurley is a bitch. Sending his entire bench to the locker room and not shaking hands while on his own home court?
The game had intensity but circumstances weren't nasty enough that the teams required separation. He's scare and I love it.
What would he do if Adam Miller earned his 5th foul with 28 seconds left? Go find a scrub from the locker room? That program is a joke. Good luck to them in the NIT (or CBI).

And he had the gall to say we had 'no class'.

I honestly think he didn't trust his own team to refrain from doing something stupid. He prevented that by removing them from the equation altogether. I have no problem with it.
As far as not shaking hands with Tom, it's open to interpretation, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he just had to handle his own situation. He could have done both, but I don't think Tom is reading far enough into it to hold a grudge against Bob. They're cool with each other. I doubt we'll see a throwback to the Sean Miller "Poise" timeout vs Alford if the opportunity presents itself in the rematch.
If Adam Miller got a 5th foul, Bob would just tell the refs to finish out the clock with four players. Apart from being legal, nobody would care anyway.

I call BS. Not only is "jawing" commonplace in college basketball, I've seen Hurley personally do it to arizona.
"No class is defined by throwing your tie early in the game because your player received a ticky tack reach-in foul.
He could have absolutely shook Lloyd's hand but Hurley made a weak excuse that HE had to escort his players to the locker room.
I'd love to see another reenactment of the Miller "late substitution" at home, just to agitate him further in Tucson.
F*** assu.
Hurley may suffer a cardiac event on the court one day. I have no idea why he tried to spin it. If ASU blew us out by 20 he would be coming out of the "curtain of distraction" which is already literally illegal and should be banned as it is unsportsmanlike. The university actually funds it which is crazy.
I don't care what our players said to those kids with all the goofy haircuts. You don't Headbutt someone. You don't get physical. Caleb Love was well within his rights to press charges if he wanted to. You can say just about anything you want to anyone and if they attack you they are going down for it. I think the BIG12 should suspend Hurley and the kid who performed the headbutt personally.
We nearly lost the game playing poorly on the road which is par for the course for Tommy Lloyd and this season, but we managed to stick to it enough and push through. ASU missed enough shots and we actually hit our FTs for a change. That was really the tale of the tape.
Tommy made 1 great move toward the middle of the game by putting in Conrad just to make a statement. Conrad made the most of his opportunity. ASU got all the calls in the first half. We got reffed out of the game big time but still managed to hang around. Then the refs turned on ASU in the 2nd half and we got all the calls. We capitalized intelligently early by getting those cheapies in shooting motions which racked up some extra FT attempts and then it was just a marching parade to the Charity Stripe for farting incorrectly in our favor.
We are lucky that the refs called it evenly and didn't just continue to call us with the cheapies all game. Well balanced poor reffing, and well played from a Coaching perspective by Tommy. Good work there, credit and praise when due.
I'm not overly invested in it, but this is my 1 comment.

Only other comment really is I don't see a point in shaking hands. These are paid professional athletes. They shouldn't be forced to fake sportsmanship. There definitely would have been a punch thrown in that "hand shake line" and we would have been without some players. Hurley actually did the best thing for our team overall. Tommy didn't recognize what was going on at all. Poor awareness from a young Head Coach.
I wish they would do away with the handshake line and make it similar to the NFL where the Head Coaches can shake hands or Nod if they want to and leave the overly paid children out of it.
It's more of "forced sportsmanship", as opposed to "fake". I believe the handshake line truly teaches players that this is just a game. 40 minutes of aggression can be erased with a brief, cordial goodbye.
If NHL playoff teams can donut with class, college basketball players have no excuse.
Lloyd was aware of the situation because he was joking with Love on the sidelines during the review process. He just didn't overreact and cry about it, despite the fact that his player was unnecessarily tossed.
