Arizona Vs Utah 🏀 Game Preview/Discussion Thread 2/8/24 6pm PAC12N
The Arizona Wildcats will travel to Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Utes in Pac-12 play this Thursday from the Huntsman Center on the Pac-12 Network. Arizona leads the current series, 39-32, and they come in as 5.5-point road favorites, with the total hovering 160.5. Stay tuned for our Arizona vs Utah Prediction.
Arizona Wildcats
Arizona improved to 17-5 after defeating Stanford at home, 82-71. The Wildcats marched back in the second half against the Cardinal, and they'll seek a fourth straight win here in Salt Lake City. Arizona is scoring 89.0 points per game, on 49.0% shooting, while allowing 72.1 ppg, and they're currently first in the Pac-12 with a 8-3 record in league play. The Wildcats are 7-3 over their last ten games, and they've gone 3-3 on the road this season.
Tommy Lloyd's team pushes the tempo at will, averaging 77.2 possessions per game (8th), and they've knocked down 36.5% of their treys (57th).
UNC transfer Caleb Love posted a nice line (18/8/7) in the win over Stanford, and he leads Arizona in scoring (18.9), while grabbing 5.0 rpg.
Junior big Oumar Ballo has grabbed 13 boards or more in five of the last seven games, and he leads the Wildcats in rebounding (9.4), while scoring 13.0 ppg.
Veteran guard Pelle Larson went for a game-high 22 points versus UCLA, and he leads the team in assists (3.4), while scoring 12.5 ppg.
Utah Utes
Utah moved to 15-7 after defeating Colorado at home by five, 73-68. The Utes came thru in the clutch to take down the Buffaloes, and they'll now look to hand the Wildcats a loss this Thursday night. Utah is scoring 78.4 points per game, on 47.3% shooting, while allowing 71.2 ppg, and they're currently 5th in the Pac-12 with a 6-5 record in conference play. The Utes are 5-5 over their last ten games, and they're 12-0 in Salt Lake City.
Craig Smith's team has played a bit slower since the start of conference play, averaging 71.2 possessions per game (190th), and they're shooting 36.8% from the outside(45th).
Veteran big man Branden Carlson struggled in the Colorado victory, and he leads Utah in scoring (16.1) and rebounding (6.4).
Senior guard Gabe Madsen led the way with 21 points in the win over Colorado, and he's second on the team at 13.0 ppg.
Georgia Tech transfer Deivon Smith flirted with a triple-double against the Buffaloes, and he's posting a well-rounded line of 11.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg, and a team-leading 5.3 apg.
Arizona vs Utah Trends
ARZ is 14-8 against the spread, with a 10-11-1 O/U record
UTA is 11-11 ATS, with a 9-11-2 over/under record.
BDU's Free Pick
Arizona's been a bit shaky on the road this season, but they come into a manageable spot against an inconsistent Utah team. The Utes have slowed down offensively with the absence of Robbie Worster and Branden Carlson's recent struggles, so the Wildcats have a real chance to come in and hand them their first home loss of the year. I like leaning on Arizona's offensive upside here, and with Utah being undefeated in Salt Lake City, tilt the margin for safety as it could finish close.
Arizona is favored at -5 and the Over/Under is 160.5

160.5 is very high. That assumes a lot from us. We are 3-3 on the road right? Utawww is undefeated at Home? (Without checking just thinking off the top of my head).
It could be an old fashioned donald brooke.
I have to think Utaw will try to shoot 3's and I hope we attack the rim a lot. 80-79 isn't going to get it done for the Over... that's kind of crazy to think. So maybe we are looking at a 92-70 type of game. Should be an interesting matchup.
I think the -5 is a little bit suspect. If we aren't covering the spread I feel like we are losing the game outright. Utaw ML is not that lucrative I think it's only around +200ish.

It would be a great time for Pelle to have a signature game in his old arena.
What's up with the seats @Utaw? My neck hurts thinking about the fans having to crank their neck's to watch their end of the court
Old arena that has always been awkward. Played drums there in '03 for a tournament and we had to somehow set the kit up IN the stands.
The arena is actually underground (you walk in from the top)
Tommy ought to be ashamed of himself. Allowing Utaw to just do whatever they wanted to get back into it. The easiest 3pt shots you can get in a competitive game of basketball. There is no game that is assumed for us the way Tommy has us playing. It is all offense vs offense now. This means any team can beat us. Not that much skill is required considering our Rank.
If this game didn't prove Boswell needs to be benched going forward then I don't know what to say. I am going to lose my mind if I have to watch him walk the damn ball up the court again. Talk crap all you want on me, act like he is your Golden Calf and his 16pts was the reason you go on in life, but don't tell me we are "Run And Gun" "Up Tempo" Anything when Boswell is in the game. That kid plays at his own speed with his that of a Slug. Who the hell does he think he is? He is not Chris Paul. He doesn't have any spots to get to. The amount of times he almost got a 10 second being casual was maddening. Even his own teammates had to clap to get him to realize how slow he is.
The only reason there is any disparity in stats between Boswell and Bradley is the Minutes and the Rotation. Flip the roles and you will see a flip in the stats. There is not 1 PG on this roster, but 1 guy brings the energy, the other guy saps the energy. For the slow ones here, Bradley brings the energy.
We are a team that is 100% reliant on a chucker. Love is the PG now. Pelle and KJ better get their hardhats and lunch pails because they are going to be needed big time if we want to have any success this season.
My hat goes off to Ballo tonight. That dude was a Dude tonight. Probably his best game since the Maui Jim. I have never seen him play well vs another kid from Mali - in fact he is habitually dominated by any kid from his Country, but he found a way to stay in the game, with 4 Fouls, and not get forced to the FT Line in the process.
Way to survive a game Tommy. Now onto what appears to be a fuller strength Colorado team. The Tadpole is waiting and I say Boyle him and his army alive.

Didn't know it was underground. If they had a crowd I can see it getting loud in there. You brought a drum set or marching equipment? Can't imagine having to play quads or quints in there. I'd get disoriented.
Drumset. Could barely fit it within the aisle. Coincidentally, it was a multiple OT game against Gonzaga (and Tommy Lloyd) in the tourney. Luke Walton was a beast.

Aren't you ever happy with a win. Road games are tough and not guaranteed. This was Utahs first loss at home in a long time. If you didn't think Utah would play better in the 2nd half your delusional. They hit a couple big shots to start the 2nd half and the crowd did the rest. Your take is way off-base and it shows that you predicted AZ to lose this game.
Aside from a couple of missed FTs that we can usually count on him to make, Pelle finally did have his signature @Utah performance.
On a different note, at what point in the season are we going to start running "last shot" plays that aren't idiotic as hell? It's getting really old.

My write up was me being happy about the win.
I think you are acting as if you are new to this here. Utaw was accurately predicted by me to be a tough game. However, the way it shook out, we had full control. Tommy let it slip away with is USUAL piss poor 3pt defense. It all came in the 2nd half. That is unacceptable behavior. Also allowing Boswell to be on that court for the minutes he was is criminal. It shows a lack of coaching ability. We have a bench. Tommy decided we are a 7.5 player team. Just like he decided we were a 6.5 player team last year and before that a 6 player team.
I do not respect that. He has held Boro hostage for years. The "3pt Shooting Champion of our team" apparently. He did nothing to develop Paulius into any sort of role. I understand Henri let Tommy down, but now I am starting to believe Dylan has refused to play for Tommy and forced a Redshirt because Tommy would have known Henri was not coming back and in-turn he would have wanted Dylan to take those minutes as he completely abandoned teaching Krivas how to play basketball in this system. I am at the point where I do not see a path for Krivas to make an impact anymore. We do not have a PG and he would only work best with a true PG.
We have a barrage of SGs and we will have to live with the results.

Tommy doesn't know how to draw up a GW play. He barely could design a 1-3-1 Lutey Ball zone beater. Baby steps. Tommy is an infant in this game. His 20 years of sucking farts from Mark Few standing up in front of him on the sideline does not equate to the responsibility of drawing up plays in the clutch.
The Cats were resilient. Despite playing a true road game against a team who is desperate for a tournament resume-builder, Arizona made big shots.

Even your favorite, a telegraphed moon ball to Ballo, would be a welcome sight compared to some of these low percentage prayers we settle for.
With a minimal amount of time remaining, Lloyd is capable of designing a game winning attempt.
In last night, game, we had significant time on the clock and the goal was to ensure that a) a senior had the ball in his hands, and b) Utah didn't get an opportunity to take the last shot.
It worked because we won the game.

If only Tommy knew how to draw up a play in the final moments.
Arizona is a #1 seed in the latest bracketology.
Amazing that a coach who can't draw up a final play can just luck into a #1 seed. Just amazing!
I will give Hungry Tom some credit. He's not as bad at drawing up a final shot as Adia. It's pretty close, though, and that's concerning.
If you read this, Tom, slide into my DMs. I have a care package of GW plays for ya pal. BTFD.

Easiest Conference of all time and he has blown it to powderpuffs. Purdue is forgivable only in the sense that Tommy had no chance and the team decided to take matters into their own hands during a stretch and pull the game close. Then Tommy had no choice, but to deploy his ringer Kylan Boo Boo Boswell to tank the game for him again. Doesn't seem like his salary is enough if he has to actively coach us OUT of games.
Or people can admit that Tommy is not HIM and Boswell has no business starting as well as needed to be benched at one point, but with only a handful of games left, it will do far too much damage to send that message.
Just my VERY humble opinion.
Far be it for me to ruffle any feathers.

Adia just needs to go. Very uncomfortable situation on the Women's side of things. Tommy is just a youngling trying to learn the sport of basketball from a HC perspective. Adia is something else.
Our conference has been drastically worse in the past. Yes, most schools underperformed in the OOC schedule but every program has a respectable record except USC, who has the talent to beat anybody on a given night (if Enfield could actually motivate the Trojans). Hell, they beat a really good Seton Hall team this season, in addition to a K-State team that recently took down Kansas.

Seems like K State always takes out Kansas in Manhattan. I won't check the history of it, but it feels that way. No idea why. What the mystere is. But it happens.
Yeah, playing in Bramledge is similar to Westwood. The fans show up for the big games and it's a rocking arena when rivals or big opponents come to town (primarily KU).
