Arizona Vs Colorado 🏀 Game Preview/Discussion Thread 1/4/24 At 730pm ESPN
The Colorado Buffaloes (11-2, 8-5 ATS, 7-6 O/U) take on the Arizona Wildcats (10-3, 10-3 ATS, 7-6 O/U) in a conference showdown on Thursday evening. The Buffaloes posted a home win against Washington State in their previous clash. The Wildcats were stunned by Stanford on Sunday. Arizona recorded a 78-68 home win against Colorado in the lone meeting last season.
Colorado Extends Winning Streak
The Colorado Buffaloes head into one of their most challenging games of the season with confidence. Colorado has recorded six straight wins propelled by the scoring. This includes a 73-69 home win against Washington to begin conference play and were 6.5 point favorites in a 74-67 home win against Washington State on Sunday to improve to 2-0 in Pac-12 play. The Buffaloes have covered in four of their last five games.
KJ Simpson continues to dominate. The junior guard has scored at least 20 points in five straight games including 34 on Sunday and has recorded an average of 21.1 PPG on the season. Tristan Da Silva did not play last month due to injury and is questionable for this one. The senior forward is a key player, averaging 15.7 PPG and 5.4 RPG. J'Vonne Hadley has scored double-digits in five straight games. The senior guard has improved his season average to 10.2 PPG on 54% shooting.
The Buffaloes are ranked 25th in DI in Ken Pomeroy's ratings and narrowly missed out on a spot in the AP Top 25. They lost their only road game against Colorado State. Colorado has reached 80 points in three of their last five games and is scoring an average of 84.2 points on the year, good for 25th. They are holding opponents to 68.8 points, positioning them 124th.
Arizona Dealt Upset Loss
The Arizona Wildcats are attempting to rebound from a bad loss. Arizona was 8-0 to begin the season but has not been as dangerous since. They lost to Purdue along with an OT loss to a ranked FAU squad. Arizona won the conference opener by a convincing 100-81 score against California but were marked huge 13-point favorites in a surprising 100-82 road loss to Stanford on Sunday. The Wildcats have covered the spread in two of their last five games.
Caleb Love continues to shine, collecting at least 22 points in three consecutive games. The senior guard is one of the best players in the conference. Love is sporting an average of 17.4 PPG and 5 RPG. Oumar Ballo is difficult to defend. The senior forward is a double-double threat. He scored 17 points in the win against California and is averaging 13.2 PPG along with 8.2 RPG. Pelle Larsson has shot at least 50% in all but three games this season. The senior guard is posting an average of 12.1 PPG.
The Wildcats are marked 4th in the country in Ken Pomeroy's ratings and plummeted six spots to #10 in the AP Top 25 after the loss to Stanford. Arizona is 6-0 at home including a win against Wisconsin. They are averaging 92.3 points on the season, good for second in the country. The Wildcats are conceding an average of 73.4 points, placing them 239th.
BDU's Free Pick
The Colorado Buffaloes are tough to beat. They have only lost two games one of which was in OT. They have won six consecutive games including the opening two PAC-12 games. Arizona has cooled down, dropping two of their last three games including a stunning loss to Stanford on Sunday.
Colorado has the scoring to keep pace. They are shooting a dazzling 51.8% on the season compared to 49.5% by Arizona. The Buffaloes also have a strong enough defense to keep this Arizona squad in check. Wildcats win, but the Buffs keep it close.
Arizona is favored at 11 and the Over/Under is 162

t. lloyd is 1-2 in the last 3 regular season PAC conference games with losses to Stanford and @ McKale to ASU.

Eddie Lampkin owns Arizona. His injury mid-TCU game is the only reason we advanced.
KJ Simpson is better than Boswell. If Kylan wants to shut me up he will have a dominant game vs KJ. Only way. The game within the game. If Boswell wants to go pro, he will have to show dominance against KJ.
Expecting to see more of the Caleb Love show if Tommy isn't going to flip the script.
Buffs have only played one true road game this season: @Colorado St, which they lost.
The great Lumpkin had 2 pts.
Eddie Pumpkin played the entire 2nd round game against Arizona. The only time he was pulled was when he picked up his 4th foul...which was a brief break.

You can omit the injury all you want, but he had a dominant game up until his ankle went capoot then he hobbled to the finish as we barely got to OT. I'll take winning by any means necessary, but I'm not going to flex about it when I know better
Plumpkin bulletin board material:

Let's not give this guy or this team another career high.
He looked pretty awful in the win over Wazzu. Tripping over his own feet, throwing the ball away and out of position for rebounds.
I'm sure he'll play with a renewed energy against us but if DaSilva is still out, we shouldn't have any issues in this matchup. If CU is at full strength, I'll be a tight one.

Ballo is a big liability. If I were Tommy I wouldn't let him leave the gym without making at least 250 Free Throws per day and each time he is under 70% per every 25 shots, he should have to run suicides. Conditioning and Free Throw Shooting are the only things he is required to work on. He is good enough at what he is in all other phases.
There's a possibility Cody Williams & Tristan da Silva could be back to play tonight. Cody sounds highly likely. Tristan sounds like an ambitious 50/50 chance at best.

Hope they play so that this team doesn't think they are better than they are. Cody especially if he is healthy. 50% doesn't sound that good to me, but every coach knows they need a win vs us especially
@Arizona if they want to make the Big Dance so I don't blame anyone for going all in against us.
In the second half of AZ's two PAC conference games this season, t. lloyd has allowed 55 and 56 points respectively.

To avoid any excuses, Tommy and Co. Have decided to make it a goal of winning by more than 30.
Impossible to fairly assess the performance tonight. We can only look at some things, make some observations, and hope that when we play a team that has their 2 best players available that we won't get dragged.
1A. Boswell checked my post pregame and got mad, but I think there is a new observation to be made for him ---> He is basically a Gabe York/Kyle Fogg. It is abundantly clear that he cannot defend man to man. We are playing Zone because of this. It is also abundantly clear he is just out there to jack up 3s. He can't play inside the arc. I saw a semi-decent pass where he rolled the ball up court. A good team with real starters would have picked that off. Cocky isn't going to hack it when the chips are down.
1B. Jaden Bradley is the correct option to play beside Caleb Love. The fact that Boswell is no longer a true PG and is now an undersized SG means we are stuck with no True PG unless we roll with Bradley. I think that it is a mistake to not play Bradley with Love when we have a devoted 3pt shooter on the floor. Pelle is not a PG at all. If you put Bradley out there with Caleb, you have 2 Guards unafraid to create off the dribble. If you want to roll with 3 Guards then I believe Boswell would be a nice piece to stand on the perimeter and receive a pass from the drives of our alpha Guards.
2. Lampkin had his way with Ballo. In fact he shut Ballo out from the Field in the 1st half completely and only 1 FG made on a little gimmicky Lob pass. Ballo got a couple points on FTs in the Hack A Shaq. A Terrible Liability. Hopefully you all understand Ballo is 6'9". He is not a great player for this era of College Basketball. He is too short to defend True Centers. He is too slow to defend bigger PFs like Lampkin. Lampkin bullied him. Kind of sad to see. The way I see it, Tommy has no choice, but to bench Ballo for Krivas. It is the only way to get Krivas enough action to make an impact by the end of the season. Maybe Krivas doesn't have the motor to play a ton of minutes, but I would prefer to see Krivas out there for the Tipoff and play the first 5 minutes then Ballo would be a great veteran spark off the bench vs anyone's backups. Let's be honest about it. Ballo was great playing side by side with Koloko. Tommy may even have to deploy Krivas and Ballo together if anything ever happened to Keshad. Just has to be considered. Krivas is not special in relief of Ballo. Ballo would be special in relief of Krivas. Minutes can be equal, but it is the method of deployment that matters.
3. This is and has been Caleb Love's team for a while now. It is Keshad's team after that. I find that to be sad. Unfortunately we are going to have to surrender to the fact that Love is going to take 25 shots in a game that truly matters for better or worse. Boswell and Love coming into tonight were equal from the Field (FG%). So before you say "Love is a chucker", Boswell is a 42% shooter too and he defers. Would you rather have someone who tries to play with the Will to Win or someone who just hangs around the perimeter having more Off-Nights than On?
4. Pelle plays hard enough to merit his minutes. I think he should be getting no less than 8 shots per game, mostly on drives as he is one of the guards along with Love + KJ + Bradley that have the guts to take the ball to the rim. You all know who that leaves out. Kylan York/Fogg
5. Still not playing lockdown defense. Don't look at the scoreboard. Hopefully we are able to play strong basketball in the next game after a waste of being out there tonight where we learned nothing about our team. Colorado was absolute trash without their real Starters. This was a walkover. Just waiting for Colorado to miss their shots sitting in a 2-3 Zone is a bit comical when you think about how poor we are at defending the 3 to come out playing 2-3... but Tommy is cocky as I continue to say. He seems to think disrespecting opponents is the correct way to play basketball. It will bite us. That's not a prediction. That's a spoiler. How many times will he need to be humbled? Not sure, but it will be disappointing if we do lose to Tommy's ego ultimately.

Can confirm. Boz was in my DMs pregame on his BDU burner account saying how pissed he was. Good call.
t. lloyd will be looking to extend his 1-game win streak vs. PAC12 opponents at McKale Center. Next up, Utah! (https://media.tenor.com/Jn2CXLQqP2AAAAAM/winning-streak.gif)

That's halarious, is that really what he said? He didn't do a damn thing last night, and it made me so happy seeing him be a non factor! Lol
@LeftCoastCats
Not to mention the "Simpson > Boswell" argument:
KJ Simpson: 10 points; 5/17 shooting and 0/3 from 3; 2 AST to 8 TO
Kylan Boswell: 14 points; 5/10 shooting and 4/7 from 3; 4 AST to 0 TO
It isn't even a debate at this point.

He literally made Ballo completely ineffective on the offensive end. Did you even watch how many times Eddie put Ballo on the floor? What was Ballo? 1-7 from the field with 1 alley oop at the end of his time on the floor in a 30pt blowout?

Not sure what you expected. That was 4 guys defending anyone with the ball all night with 1 guy sagging off waiting for a bad shot to go up or a bad pass. Colorado would have lost to the College of Biblical Studies last night.

What makes you think that we should be happy with something that is expected? I'm confused as to why you think you need extra motivation to merely show up for work and run through the motions. There was no competition last night. What did you learn about this team from the performance? I saw nothing noteworthy or new other than Boswell's role is now morphed into a Gabe York/Kyle Fogg role and Ballo is perhaps the most regressed player in the past 14 months of college basketball being bullied around by someone a lot of immature people make fun of and to use a toxic cbox word "
denigrate" the name of Eddie Lampkin at any moment they can while ignoring how he knocked Ballo on his behind almost every time he got the ball.
Don't get mad at me for reporting the facts. That's like being Anti Walter Cronkite. You can always count on me to call it like it is.

Where was the dominance? Tommy literally played a scared zone against Colorado the whole night. There is no instance of dominance in any part of the evaluation on either side. Certainly not on the court nor in the box score. If anything, sadly I must admit that KJ did a far better job with less help and Kylan Fogg. KJ would be doing far more playing next to Caleb Love if we were able to trade 1 for 1 right now. He's already basically a 55-45-90 type player when it boils down to it and that's with no supporting cast. I don't see how you can even debate this. I'm fine with Boswell as a 5th option overall. He's good as a set shooter off the ball now that this is Love's team.
Dominance is a 50 point lead with 2 seconds remaining. Colorado's injuries aside, there wasn't a single matchup where Colorado could feel good about their performance. Arizona was better in every respect except for Ballo's interior game on offense. He tried too hard to take Lampkin, which was unnecessary.

Where was your boy Eddie last night?
He literally made Ballo completely ineffective on the offensive end. Did you even watch how many times Eddie put Ballo on the floor? What was Ballo? 1-7 from the field with 1 alley oop at the end of his time on the floor in a 30pt blowout?
You must be allot of fun at parties!
What a lame comment. At least try to use sports knowledge.
Your an idiot dude, you don't even know what I meant by that. You would literally be the worst person in the world to watch a Arizona basketball game with. Just sitting there critiquing every single little thing, can't just sit back and enjoy a good thing Ever.

Another wildly irrelevant comment. Next.
