Arizona Vs West Virginia 🏈 Game Preview/Discussion Thread 10/26/24 4pm FS1

A Big 12 rivalry begins on Saturday night. The West Virginia Mountaineers (3-4; 2-5-0 ATS) and Arizona Wildcats (2-4; 1-6-0 ATS) will collide as conference rivals for the first time. Arizona Stadium is the site for their 7:00 p.m. EST kickoff. Both teams have had a rocky season. Who will shake it off with a win this weekend?

The Mountaineers opened conference play with two wins before a pair of uncompetitive losses to ranked programs. On the road now, they'll try to finally get their third Big 12 victory. When things are clicking, WVU relies on an offense averaging 406.7 yards and 28.4 points per game. They run all over everybody in those games, racking up 202.1 rushing yards on 4.9 yards per carry. That limits the workload for QB Garrett Greene (55.9% completion), whose TD total (9) almost matches his interceptions (8). The Mountaineers average 204.6 passing yards per game. West Virginia didn't touch 20 points in either of their recent losses. Can they get back on track in Arizona?

Defensively, this is a team that has only held two opponents under 28 points. The Mountaineers surrender 28.7 points per game and 382.0 yards. West Virginia's defense is last among Big 12 schools in passing yards per attempt (9.3), Passing TDs (15), and interceptions (3). They allow 254.3 passing yards per game, the second-most in the conference. WVU is much more competitive on the ground, limiting opponents to 3.6 yards per carry and 127.7 yards per game. Will that be enough to hide their horrible pass defense this weekend?

The Wildcats have dropped four of five, all against Big 12 foes. The first loss wasn't considered a conference game, so they're lucky to have a 1-3 record in conference play. Still, it's been a rude welcome to the Big 12 for Arizona. The hope on Saturday is that they get enough from the defense to snap their three-game losing streak. The Wildcats give up 27.6 points per game. Arizona holds opposing QBs to 58.4% completion and 217.1 yards per game. On the ground, foes manage 4.4 yards per carry and 147.1 yards per game. This defense doesn't have a glaring weakness but isn't strong in any area. Four of the five conference mates that Arizona faced scored at least 28 points. Do the Wildcats have a plan to contain West Virginia?

Offensively, Arizona's 23.0 points per contest are the second-fewest in the conference. The team musters 389.4 yards per game, the fourth-fewest. Scoring has been a struggle in Tuscon. QB Noah Fifita has more interceptions (10) than passing touchdowns (9). He enters this game with a 59.1% completion percentage and 253.4 passing yards per game. Meanwhile, Arizona's rushing attack averages 4.8 yards per carry. It helps them gain 136.0 yards per game. Last week, they finished with only seven points at home. Let's see if they have more in store for this one.

Arizona is favored at 3.5 and the Over/Under is 54.5 points

Arizona football's only goal is to beat ASU. This may be true for the foreseeable future.

Arizona sharing a conference with West Virginia—may as well bundle Hawaii and Maine like God intended.

Just Win the game. That is all that matters. Give us something to hold onto before T-Mac packs it in for the year.
