I learned zero about this team today that I didn't already know. However, if Tommy will allow Townsend and Carter to play together more, then we may have a chance to win a few more games this year than expected AND I believe Conrad should play PG for this team at least in the 20 minute range. It is a much different level offense with his ability to work the ball to anywhere he wants on the court.

loses the locker room again

If Tommy could get the locker room back, then manage to lose it again, that would be a special sort of failure

KansasCityCats

Giving a significant amount of Krivas' minutes to Veesaar was huge, in addition to benching Love when he struggled (again) from the field.

Our staff mixed up the lineup and were finally getting consistency from our upperclassmen.

Although SUU played horribly against ucla, they were 8-2 and we handled them. Good game.

The interesting takeaway from the Box is Carter's 5-9 Free Throws. When he gets that spotlight at the stripe and you can see his actual athletic build, you can literally see how he is a beast. His FT shot needs some work. It isn't broken, it is just too strong. The glaring problem is only 2 shots from the Field. For a player who gets 9 FT attempts, you would think he was an active player in the game... which he was. He merits his minutes. Even if it is getting to the line from over the back fouls or taking the ball up court and getting fouled. I think we will see some games come up where we really need him to work his way to the rim, get some And-1's, maybe some Alley Oops if anyone is capable of an accurate pass. He is almost redundant to KJ Lewis, but he is much bigger.

I think ultimately our best roster is with Townsend and Carter out there together. Townsend is smaller, but he has pretty long arms. Long enough to close out. His primary job shouldn't be guarding the perimeter though.

Key takeaway there is just because you are a "3" on Offense, doesn't mean you need to be a "3" on defense. Tommy really should just challenge this team to be Deep and play a lot of press defenses. Mixing it up early and often. Not just when we get down by 10 points. This team we played today was finished as soon as Tommy activated the presses.

If Tommy wants to deploy 10 players he can. We don't need 7 guys scoring 10ppg+, but we need to choose a path either way. It would be a smart way to coach this roster if he wants to play Run and Gun because if he can force turnovers and extra possessions via the press featuring Carter, Caleb, KJ, and Bradley at times, then inevitably we will be able to cut off a good part of the "Run" portion and be able to land somewhere in the "Gun" portion. That is an outside the box way to get around our lack of athleticism with Bigs.

Getting creative is important now. These next few games are how we figure out our identity for at least the first 3 weeks of Big 12 play. 5 to 7 games worth. If it is working, then we just continue to build on it, polish it up. If it works vs the jobbers or slow UCLA, but not in Conference, then we have to adjust.

This is the time to really buckle down.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see much of the game.  There was no way to learn much positive from this one, and fortunately we didn't learn more negative.  Thirty-six FTs and sixteen 3s. Sounds like we were moving inside, I like this. Forty-seven rebounds.  These are all good hustle numbers. Let's hope for more against UCLA.  What's up with this one game a week scheduling?
