Arizona Vs BYU 🏀 Game Preview/Discussion Thread 2/4/25 9PM ESPN

The Arizona Wildcats and the BYU Cougars meet Tuesday in college basketball action from Marriott Center.

Arizona got off to a pretty rough start this season. To their credit however, the Wildcats have looked great since mid-December. Arizona opened on a 4-5 run with losses to Wisconsin, Duke, Oklahoma, West Virginia and UCLA among wins over Canisius, Old Dominion, Davidson and Southern Utah. A win streak over Samford, Central Michigan, TCU, Cincinnati, West Virginia, UCF and Baylor came next, then a loss to Texas Tech. Since then it's been four straight wins over Oklahoma State, Colorado, Iowa State and Arizona State, giving the Wildcats a 15-6 overall record through the first 21 games of the 2024-25 season.

In their Arizona State matchup on Saturday, the Wildcats came out of halftime looking up at a slim 35-34 advantage on the scoreboard. Arizona got it going from there on a 46-38 run and took the eventual win 81-72 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Caleb Love with 27 points, six boards and seven assists. Jaden Bradley added 14 points with four rebounds and two assists, while Henri Veesaar came off the bench for 11 points and six boards in 20 minutes. Carter Bryant had 10 rebounds and eight points off the bench as well.

Over on the BYU side, they had a spotty run going in early January, but other than that the Cougars have been a very consistent team all season long. BYU opened on a 10-2 run with losses to Ole Miss and Providence among wins versus Central Arkansas, UC Riverside, Queens U, Idaho, MS Valley State, NC state, Fresno State, Wyoming, Florida A&M and Arizona State. A 1-4 stretch came next with losses to Houston, Texas Tech, TCU and Utah (and a win over Oklahoma State). Since then it's been four straight wins over Colorado, Cincinnati, Baylor and UCF, giving the Cougars a 15-6 overall record through 21 games this season.

Matched up against UCF in their weekend outing, the Cougars held a 40-38 deficit by the break. BYU woke up in the second half on a 43-35 run and took the eventual victory 81-75 in the end. Tops in scoring was Richie Saunders with 22 points, three rebounds and two steals. Mawot Mag added 19 points with five assists and three rebounds, while Trevin Knell chipped in with 15 points and four rebounds alongside a pair of steals in 20 minutes on the floor.

BYU is favored at 1.5 points and the Over/Under is 152.5 points

Let's talk about the Wildcats Vs Cougars.

I've watched BYU a few times this year. I really like the a freshman PG. He makes some Freshman mistakes at times but you can see the talent. Good size too. He's been hurt on and off though.
I think AZ wins tonight as long as BYU doesn't have a near perfect night from 3. I don't think they have the experience in the paint to hang with AZ.
I think AZ will pull away later in the game and we won't have to sweat it.

Yeah dude. He'll be a high pick in the next draft. He's really good when he doesn't suck ass.

The starting matchups Tom should do:

Bryant - Demin
Bradley - Saunders
Love - Knell
Veesaar - Mag
Awaka - Keita

What starting matchups will Tom actually do?:

MY GUESS

Bradley - Demin
Love - Saunders
Dell'Orso - Knell
Townsend - Mag
Awaka - Keita

WHAT'S YOUR GUESS?

I was generally impressed across the board. The one lingering unanswered question is: When will Tom stop playing this Starting 5 every single game?

I feel like a different group could jump out to early leads much easier. I've never been incorrect BTW.

Tommy gets some credit tonight. On the road, he recognized early enough that Mid Major players weren't going to be be enough to get it done. He didn't let Townsend and Del Taco absorb anymore minutes and shots than necessary tonight. I believe a combined 2-9.

Instead of 2 guys both going 1-9 or 2-9 he consolidated them and let the real "Power 4" Talent on this roster handle business.

That kid Egor from Russia doesn't look like a Top 5 NBA talent to me in this class. Maybe he could be Top 20-30. I am sure he will go over-drafted though. Maybe by OKC since they seem to collect guys like him who won't need to play until 2045.
